Symbols and Properties of Inequalities

Symbols of Inequalities
- > means ’greater than’
- < means ’less than’
- means ’greater than or equal to’
- means ’less than or equal to’

Properties of inequalities
An inequality has the same characteristics as an equation except that in the place of the equal sign, there is an inequality sign.
Do note the following:

Number Line

The number line is used to illutrate the solutions of linear inequalities. A solid dot is used when the number in included (≤, ≥) and a hollow dot is used when the number is not included (<, >).

In the picture below, the inequalities on the left column is represented on the number line in the middle. From the overlapping portions of both inequalities represented by the arrow, the solution of the inequalities can be found, which is written in the right column as shown.
Where there are no overlapping portions, the two inequalities is said to have "No solution".

Explanation and Worked Example

We use the same way to solve a linear inequality as we solve an equation. However, do remember to reverse the inequality sign when you multiply or divide both sides of the inequality by a negative number. Watch the following video for a recap and worked examples!
